Opening match status uncertain
Carrasquilla (groin) was named in Panama's World Cup squad despite not having fully recovered from the left leg injury sustained in the Clausura final with Pumas UNAM, leaving his availability for the opening fixture uncertain, according to coach Thomas Christiansen, per Deportes RPC. "I would like to give you the information I have, but I am not a doctor to commit myself. If there is a good evolution, Coco might make it, I cannot tell you he will not make it because if he then arrives you will say I lied. According to the tests, Coco has the worse injury of the two. Anibal has been under treatment longer, he is already on the pitch running, doing sprints, changes of direction, and Coco has not reached that point yet."
Analysis: Carrasquilla's fitness is the most pressing concern in the Panama camp heading into the World Cup, with Christiansen acknowledging that fellow injury doubt Anibal Godoy is further along in his recovery. The coach stopped short of ruling Carrasquilla out of the opening fixture but made clear there is still significant ground to cover before the midfielder can be considered available for selection. His progression over the coming days will be the key factor in determining whether he plays any part in Panama's tournament opener.
Called up for World Cup
Carrasquilla (groin) has been called up for the World Cup despite a recent injury with his club, according to manager Thomas Christiansen, per Ole.US. "He suffered an injury in the last match against Cruz Azul, and after that gam,e we contacted him. Until yesterday, we did not have a report from his team. An injury cannot be diagnosed until 24 hours later. The images do not agree with the report that has been sent to us. It's an uncertain situation, I can't play to leave Carrasquilla out if he's going to arrive later. We have included it in the list, and if it does not arrive, you have a substitute. Let's all trust that he will reach the first match of the World Cup."
Analysis: Carrasquilla had to leave his last league match ahead of the World Cup with an injury, but he has still been called up for the tournament. This comes despite no clear diagnosis, as the team is instead taking the risk of involving one of their key players, even with some uncertainty around him. He will likely be set for a few days or a week of recovery before potentially joining the team for further training, although any inclusion in friendlies is probably unlikely.
